Different directories for different jobs
There's no single "best business directory" — there's a best one for each job. Local consumer search uses different directories than B2B prospecting which uses different directories than M&A target hunting. Here's the 2026 landscape:
Consumer / local search
- Google Business Profile — by far the most-used. If your business doesn't have a profile, you're invisible
- Apple Maps Connect — rising fast as iOS share of search grows
- Yelp — restaurants + services; declining outside US but still material for new-customer discovery
- Better Business Bureau (BBB) — older demographic, still trust-signal for some services
B2B sales prospecting
- SMBs.com — free + paywall-free browsing; 390k+ companies, 490k+ decision-makers
- Apollo.io — 270M contacts; paid; our review
- ZoomInfo — 330M contacts; enterprise pricing; pricing analysis
- LinkedIn Sales Navigator — pay-walled but the freshest data on the market
M&A target hunting
- Crunchbase — best for funded startups and tech
- PitchBook — best for private equity + investment data; very expensive
- BizBuySell — actual businesses listed for sale (mostly Main Street)
- SMBs.com — useful starting point for sourcing prospects in specific city + industry combinations
Bulk data / list-buying
- Dun & Bradstreet — the legacy data giant; expensive but unmatched on credit-worthiness data
- InfoGroup / Data Axle — bulk-list licensing
- SMBs.com Data Exports — CSV bundles from $49 for a country/industry slice
How to pick
- Selling local services? Get on Google Business first, Yelp second
- B2B prospecting solo or small team? SMBs.com free + Hunter free
- B2B prospecting at scale? Apollo, with SMBs.com as a cheap supplement
- Looking for funded startups to sell into? Crunchbase + Apollo
- Hunting acquisition targets? SMBs.com (city + industry filter) + BizBuySell
