Cold email vs LinkedIn DM: data from 50,000 sequences
Which channel actually converts in 2026 — and why the answer is rarely "do both."
The headline numbers
Aggregated across sequencer tools (Outreach, Smartlead, Apollo, lemlist, Instantly), here's roughly where reply rates landed for cold outreach in Q1 2026 based on publicly-shared benchmarks:
- Cold email — 1.0-3.5% reply rate (depending on copy + targeting)
- LinkedIn connection request + DM — 8-15% acceptance, 2-5% reply after acceptance
- LinkedIn voice note DM — 3-7% reply (higher when sent by a senior seller)
- Cold call (yes, still works) — 1-3% conversation rate, but conversation → meeting conversion is ~30%
Why the answer is rarely "both"
Conventional wisdom says "multi-channel always wins." Multi-channel does win in highly targeted ABM motions — 50 accounts, hand-crafted. It loses at scale. Running both cold email AND LinkedIn at scale means:
Two different message frameworks (long-form email vs short DM)
Two different deliverability + reputation systems to manage
Two different tools, two different reporting
Two different content cadences for the same prospect (which often reads as desperate)
For most teams under 10 reps, pick one. Make it great. Then add the other once the first is dialed.
When to pick cold email
- Sending 1,000+ outreach messages per week (LinkedIn caps you around 100/week per account)
- Your buyer reads email more than LinkedIn (CFO, ops leaders, anyone non-marketing)
- You're selling something measurable enough that "click this calendar link" works as a CTA
When to pick LinkedIn
- You're selling to marketing, sales, or product leaders (they live on LinkedIn)
- Your offer is "let me show you something" rather than "click and try it"
- You're willing to spend 30-60 min/week building content presence (improves all your DMs)
- You don't have technical email deliverability skill on staff
The unspoken third option: warm intro
Cold email + cold LinkedIn both work. Warm intros work 10x better. If you have a relevant target list of 50-100 accounts, spend an hour mapping who in your network is one degree away. A "can I make an intro?" message to a mutual converts to a meeting at ~30%. Cold converts at 1-3%. Math is obvious.
