How to find verified business emails for free
The free stack we actually use to find + verify B2B emails without paying for a tool. 4 tools, 2 minutes per contact.
The free stack
You can find + verify roughly 100 business emails per month for $0 if you stitch the right free tiers together. Here's the stack:
- SMBs.com — free directory of 390k+ companies, 3 decision-maker unlocks/day (~90/month). Verified emails included.
- Hunter.io — 50 free email-finder lookups + 100 free verifications per month
- LinkedIn — free for cross-checking names and current employment
- Browser detective work — checking the company's About + Contact page for public email patterns
The 2-minute workflow per contact
1. Find the company on SMBs.com. Search by name or browse by city + industry. Each listing shows employee band, location, and decision-maker count.
2. Click "N contacts" and unlock. Sign in with your email (free), get names + titles + verified emails ranked by seniority.
3. Cross-check on LinkedIn. Confirm the person is still at the company. If they moved, search the new company on SMBs.com instead.
4. If SMBs.com doesn't have them, pattern-match. Find any verifiable email at the company (Hunter free tier, public Contact page). Apply the pattern (first.last@ is most common). Verify with Hunter's free verifier.
Why verifying matters
Sending to invalid emails is the #1 killer of cold-email deliverability. Three bounces per hundred sends starts hurting your sender reputation; ten per hundred and your domain gets flagged.
Every email you've found through pattern-matching needs to be verified before you send. Hunter, NeverBounce, DeBounce, ZeroBounce — they all do the same thing at roughly the same accuracy.
When the free stack breaks down
You'll hit limits if you're sending more than ~100 outreach messages per month. Above that, the math says: pay $29/month for our Pro tier (unlimited unlocks), or $34/month for Hunter Starter (500 lookups), or $99/month for Apollo.
The right tool depends on what else you need. If it's just emails, Hunter wins. If you need full company profiles + ranking, SMBs.com Pro wins. If you need sequencer + CRM integration too, Apollo wins.
Frequently asked questions
Yes — work email addresses (the kind we're talking about) are business contact information, lawful to compile and use for legitimate B2B outreach under CAN-SPAM (US), GDPR legitimate interest (EU), CASL (Canada). Personal Gmail / Yahoo addresses, or personal phone numbers, have stricter rules — don't scrape those.
About 70-80% if you've confirmed the pattern from a real verified address at the same company. Verifying before sending pushes the working rate to ~95%.
Hunter's free tier (100/month) and NeverBounce's free 100-credit trial are both reliable for small volumes.
