LinkedIn voice notes for sales: what actually works

Reply rates from teams sending 50,000+ voice DMs. When voice wins, when it bombs.

The data

Voice notes on LinkedIn currently outperform text DMs by 1.5-2x reply rate. The catch: only when they're short (under 30 seconds), specific to the recipient, and not pitched. Generic voice spam underperforms text spam — recipients can hear it instantly.

When voice wins

Senior recipients (VP+) reply to voice notes at 5-8% vs 2-3% for text. Marketing + sales leaders prefer voice over text. Founders typically prefer text (faster to triage).

The four rules

  • Under 30 seconds — anything longer feels like a podcast
  • Open with a specific, recent thing about them (LinkedIn post, job change, company announcement)
  • Ask one thing — not a pitch
  • End with a clear next step — "reply with yes if you want me to send..." beats "would you like to chat"
